The sample is 6 cm x 4 cm. I collected the sample from the Chrome Claim's main pit in 1991. Most of the Chromite in the Bird River Sill is subhedral but occasionally when there is a white matrix the Chromite forms 1 to 2 mm octahedrons.

The sample is 6 cm x 4 cm. I collected the sample from the Chrome Claim's main pit in 1991. Most of the Chromite in the Bird River Sill is subhedral but occasionally when there is a white matrix the Chromite forms 1 to 2 mm octahedrons.

Polished section (1mm FOV) of a chromite grain extracted from a serpentinised Cambrian boninitic cumulate from the Heathcote Fault Zone. The core of the crystal is chromite, with an overgrowth of magnetite, which is intergrown with hematite (martitized).

1.8 x 1.7 x 1.2 cm. This is one of the largest, equant chromite crystals I have seen. It is usually found in tiny crystals or grains. It is an octahedron with some luster and a mottled black color.
