Abstract/Notes | At Leveäniemi, about 3 km SW of Svappavaara, iron ore is presently mined by LKAB. The ore mainly consists of apatite-bearing magnetite partly oxidized to hematite (martitization). During this oxidation the primary apatite has been transformed into an exotic flora of secondary Fe-Ca-Al-phosphates forming euhedral crystals and crystal aggregates in drusy parts of the martite ore. The size and quality of these phosphates renders Leveäniemi world class status for such mineralization. The mineralogy at Leveäniemi has earlier been described by Bjällerud (1989) and to some extent by Augsten (2009). Here we present additional data concerning these phosphates. |
