Abstract/Notes Prominent north- to northwest-trending dikes (herein termed the Hearst swarm) west of the Kapuskasing Structural Zone (KSZ) in northern Ontario yield a paleomagnetic pole position of 48.6°N, 69.0°E, dm = 6.9, dp = 3.6 (60 samples from 12 dikes).Using paleomagnetic, petrographic, and structural criteria the Hearst swarm is correlated with the 2.6 Ga Matachewan swarm east of the KSZ. A positive correlation is observed between the trend and paleomagnetic declination of Hearst–Matachewan dikes and may result from an ~15 °post-2.6 Ga rotation of terranes across the KSZ.Paleomagnetic and structural data from the Hearst dikes are consistent with the regional westward tilting of the crust near the southern KSZ as first proposed in 1983 by Percival and Card.
