Abstract/NotesThe present article provides a historical review and the current status of thortveitite world-wide. Thortveitite was first described by Schetelig 1911 and named after the well-known amateur mineralogist Olaus Thortveit in 1veland, Setesdal. Despite his early death he became well known for his contribution of excellent mineral and crystal collections from lveland, donated to the University of Oslo 1914. Shortly after thortveitite was described from Madagascar (Lacroix 1920). Since then thortveitite has been discovered in several other locations around the world, viz. Japan (2), Russia (4), USA (2), Sweden (4), Finland (1), Brazil (1) and P.R. China (1). The figures in brackets are number offindings. The recent analysis of thortveitite is summarized, and a choice of selected references are provided. The latest analysis of Iveland-thortveitite shows up to 30 % Y+RE203 replacing scandium.
